Build a blog for traffic and fail

by Franco on May 16, 2011

This training blog applies and is meant for online network marketers…

My blog has been here helping me build my list, generating great leads and prospects for my business since 2006.

The main reason it’s still here and it’s not a ghost town is
precisely because I did NOT build it to “get traffic.”

While everyone is being taught to build a blog
so they can “get traffic” and to build synthetic
“tribes” and “promote each other’s content”
and all that “sounds good” crap…

All that does it keeps newbies busy… frustrated
and confused… and it consistently funnels their
money to the few charismatic “goo-roos” who
created that theory “out of thin air.”

Seriously.

Blogging only really got ramped up and going
in the home business niche in 2008.

A full two years after I started to blog as a marketing
tool in my business. So where all this “data” came that
you can teach newbies how to “blog for traffic” and how
“synthetic” “kiss my ass, and I’ll kiss your ass” content
“syndication” and fake tribes can actually help you
generate real and interested traffic… just never made sense.

But it sounded good on the “goo-roo’s” seminars
and webinars and conference calls…

Can you smell snake oil?

Anyway… here’s my opinion (humble opinion) on
why my little, ugly blog has been cranking money
and profits and leads and prospects and DUPLICATION
for me for almost half a decade while I keep doing
the EXACT OPPOSITE that the poor newbie keeps
told (sold) to do…

I NEVER built my blog to “generate traffic.”

I generate traffic from my REAL business marketing
and systems that I created and built up through time
to always have MULTIPLE PILLARS and ways to find
a consistent stream of new people to my information…

NOT fake, smiling “like” friends…

I mean REAL people that are like minded
and actually already having similar thoughts
in their head as me… and already CONSUMING
the type of information I offered…

They find me through my videos, post cards,
networking activities and offline advertising
methods too.

Social places like forums, social networks,
comments and word of (gasp!) mouth referrals…

So my advertising was already rocking and rolling.

So why build a blog?

To be heard.

To offer them more complete training and information
that you simply can not provide via follow up emails…

To serve them more.

And a funny thing happened…

This information on this blog platform which
was originally used to serve and deliver value
to an existing team of sales people and a growing
network of prospects… helped me to close more sales.

So my blog was actually built to serve first.

Then it began to help me train my team.

Then that led to people trusting me quicker and
so it began to actually close more sales for me
and handle common objections etc…

THEN… after that was laid down…

After it became a platform focused on serving
a market FIRST and foremost… those little titles,
descriptions and keywords in my content actually
started to get indexed on the search engines and
then…

My little service and value and training blog
started to generate its own traffic… and some
of the people showing up actually liked the content
and started getting all nosy and poking around on
my links, opting into my list and calling me…

Eureka!

What I see “out there” online is that people START
their blog with the whole expectation to have it
make them rich and flood them with traffic instantly.

And so, a couple weeks go by… they are not sipping
on Champagne or having caviar yet… and so, they stop
blogging… “it’s not working… why waste my time…”

Totally wrong mindset.

So… I just wanted to let you know the story on
how NOT to build a blog… and how this blog
became the KING KONG that it is today, because
I was basically a “training and support site” first
and foremost and built to serve and deliver value
through content…

Different philosophy and foundation.

Different results.

More later on how to absolutely CRUSH IT
online by going offline…

yeah… I’m full of contradictions…

that’s why I get paid consistently…

Step away from your herd for a minute…

And open up to the fact that there is always
more than one way to make a pizza and sometimes
it takes less dough and more mind…

Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your content seem to be running off the screen in Ie.
I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought
I’d post to let you know. The design look great though!

Hope you get the problem fixed soon. Kudos

Hi there! Do you know if they make any plugins
to safeguard against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing
everything I’ve worked hard on. Any tips?

You can certainly see your enthusiasm in the work you write.
The sector hopes for even more passionate writers such as you
who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. All the time go
after your heart.

I’m extremely impressed with your writing skills and also with the
layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself?
Either way keep up the nice quality writing,
it is rare to see a great blog like this one nowadays.

Can I just say what a comfort to find somebody that really knows
what they’re discussing over the internet. You actually
realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
More people really need to look at this and understand this side of your story.

I was surprised that you aren’t more popular since you surely have the gift.

Hey exceptional website! Does running a blog such as this take a large amount of work?
I’ve virtually no understanding of programming but
I had been hoping to start my own blog in the
near future. Anyways, if you have any suggestions or tips for new
blog owners please share. I understand this is off subject nevertheless I simply wanted to ask.
Thanks a lot!

Hi, Neat post. There is an issue with your site in web explorer, could test this? IE still is the market chief and a large portion of people will leave out your magnificent writing due to this problem.|

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. A great read. I’ll definitely be back.|

Thanks Michelle! And you’re absolutely right.

In the past 18 months alone, so many people
have decided to jump on this “generic guru training”
model and target network marketers…

They MUST make this stuff seem complicated
so they can try and justify and hustle the expensive
coaching, info products, and seminars they herd
people to…

Funny how their “stages” were “self erected”
meaning… no legitimate network marketing
companies invited them to speak to their
networkers… so they instead decided to
“build their own stage”…

The gurus build their own stage…

And say: Come here and just learn
from the GUUUURUUUUS they are
such “rock stars” and you should follow
them or else you are not smart and not serious…

“And don’t worry… NOTHING will be pitched at you
so it’s a SAFE environment… blah blah…”

Then the gurus show up and deliver their
stories and repackaged same ole same ole
fundamentals…

Before the “event” they are all telling people
to go since they will not be “pitched” etc…

But DURING the event I noticed on facebook
that the very same “gurus” start bragging about
how they made $31,000+ at the event from their
1 hour speach… or this other one made $19,427 “in one hour!”

Etc etc…

They had erected their own “break out rooms” where
they were, of course, selling their repackaged guru
stuff to the masses of people in network marketing
who came to learn and “not be pitched”

So sad.

Always a different color and angle and setup
but the same old result:

THE GURU BLUEPRINT:

1. Drop out of Network Marketing (for the most part).

2. Sing your own praise of how you WERE a network
marketing MONSTER back in your day…

3. Offer to show newbie (un knowing) network marketers
from all kinds of organizations “things your sponsors and
uplines did not show you…” “secrets” and “spells” and
magic potions to riches that were discovered by the
all knowing beings… etc.

4. Target Network Marketers… Mesmerize them
with tall tales and mystical “you gotta knows…”

5. COMPLETE RIP THEIR MARKETING MONEY
from them and spin them into a web of “keep sending
me your money until I allow you to do something else
with it…”

6. Teach them crap that is NOT duplicable
and truly, for the most part, doesn’t even work
for most people and is not really doable by the
very masses they seduce…

7. Take ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSIBILITY
for the LACK OF SUCCESS of the crap they teach.
Blame it all on the newbie’s lack to “understand the magic spell”
and it’s always their fault that the guru’s plans do not work
as advertised…

Shell games…

And “blogging for traffic” is just one of the games
sold to newbies that basically distracts them from
the core essence of what they SHOULD be learning
and doing in NETWORK MARKETING…

When you bust these gurus into the corner and
bring this stuff up they WILL TELL YOU:

“Duplication never worked… it was all a lie…
and that their target market is the network
marketer but they don’t show them how to
network market… they are just a targeted
consumer for ancillary and wasteful training
crap that the newbie can pick up already for
a couple bucks… and then truly learn network
marketing with the LEADERS IN THEIR PROGRAM…

Why the leaders in their program?

Obviously because they know something about
networking enough and making it work…

And most leaders these days plug into SOLID
OFFLINE and ONLINE marketing strategies
to help them actually (gasp!) grow their core
business… and lead them to systems, tools,
info and resources that help… and don’t just
distract and mesmerize…

COMMONS SENSE… the type your momma taught ya…

Nothing new under the Son…

1. Learn how to find Like Minded Strangers

2. Turn Strangers into Friends

3. Invite to your tools and info/presentations…

4. Show them your mechanism is safe
and duplicable and a simple way for them
to build a side income from home…

5. Support them with training and valuable
content… and share the loverage = Trust Building

6. Sell them something, sign them up and
plug them into training…

KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Tell the high priced snake oil selling
wizards of guru-land to take a flyin leap!

Ain’t it great!?

All good.

10 years… full time… that plan works.

I’m living proof.

I was literally just having this conversation today with a good friend of mine. Blogging for the sake of blogging does not create a following. Syndicating for the sake of syndicating, does not create a following. Creating a following is what a real tribe is.

I’d much rather people genuinely like my stuff and want to share it, than syndicate crap to build traffic for what? To come to a worthless blog with content that has no real value? That’s not how you build a following, that’s how you build a non-following. Great Post Franco!

Michele Anderson May 16, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Thanks for saying so… I know this, but people just don’t want to listen or cannot anymore they are so absorbed by the hype. Buying hype is of no value whatsoever, except for if one survives it and it becomes a very valuable learning experience. Otherwise, a business is a business… no matter where you wish to house your office, what you wish to sell, or who tells you different. Everyone cannot become a guru or an expert in the same thing, there are too many leaders and not enough participants, and far to much B.S. going around. Thanks again, Franco.
