Gary Vaynerchuk Knows How to Create Sales with Social Networking


1. The most profound words he ever heard that forever changed his life. Upon discovering the “Information Super Highway” (Internet): “We can get chicks on this thing!”

2. The next most profound thing I ever realized: “I can sell shit on this thing!”

3. In 1996 his first marketing website cost him $15,000 to build (think about that and what it costs today).

4. During that whole first year of operations, that site sold a total of $800 worth of wine. (lol)

5. In 1996: $800 in sales online. From 1998 – 2003 (just 5 years) his wine store went from $3 Million in sales to over $60 Million all due to Internet Marketing.

6. It wasn’t just the “QUAN” (quantity marketing) but mainly a hybrid of layering all the QUANTITATIVE “tactics” on top of a firm foundation of “QUAL” elements or, QUALITATIVE Marketing, longer term relationship building, engagement, branding, content marketing etc. The LIFETIME VALUE. Both QUAN and QUAL working together in a clear focus to SERVE and deliver VALUE to his market.

7. Bringing Value is key. Lifetime Value is king.

8. The Attention Graph. At the end of the day, all marketers are battling and working toward generating a sale. We all want to convert a sale. Whether we’re hard core “DR” (direct response) math and “quant” or if you’re trying to build a brand and play the marketing “long game.”

9. Many marketers have discovered and refined the art of “CONVERSION” and “SYSTEMS” but the focus lacking in most “analytical, transaction based” marketers is a respect of the LIFETIME CUSTOMER VALUE of the market.

10. If this was just a math and “quant” game, then quantitative, internet marketers like Groupon and LivingSocial would have already taken everything over. It’s not just about slamming cold numbers en masse into offers.

11. The sweet spot is in a smart, leveraged mix of the two… the VALUE is in the “ATTENTION GRAPH.”

12. I have 1.2 million followers on twitter today in 2015… but back in 2007 I had only 100,000 followers yet I received and cultivated MUCH MORE engagement and conversion, pound for pound, than I do today with over a million followers. Why is that? The “Attention Graph” has moved on… and you have to adjust to where it’s going.

13. WHY do these platforms that work SO WELL for a time, wax and wane and decrease in effectiveness? My opinion is that it’s because, more than anything else in the world, more than I know the sun will come up tomorrow… I know this… MARKETERS RUIN EVERYTHING! We game everything and in trying to manipulate it, we destroy it… in time.

14. Email marketing back in 1997 I had a 240,000 person email list that had over a 91% open rate and a 70% click through rate! Now those numbers are not even close. Why did that change? Because back in 1997, Marketers hadn’t fucked up email yet!”

15. Back then we read every single email and were happy to receive them.

16. Now we’re sick to death of email and ignore most of the email we receive.

17. People are not understanding that when one platform begins to weaken, the market is already engaging in some other platform. Like today, with the power and high conversion of Facebook Dark Post (unpublished posts on Facebook). People are still trying to find a high converting email marketing system or a way to do PPC on search engines still.

18. It’s the “Arbitrage Value” of the time. And right now it’s on Dark Posts using Facebook. It’s on the leverage of Instagram and Pinterest for those who’ve figured out how to use them.

19. Yet most people struggle with Dark Posts on Facebook because they don’t truly understand the difference in the medium. On Facebook, getting results with DP ads is way more about the CREATIVE and the CONTENT and how you weave that into the ad and the call to action and targeting of the FB platform… but people are trying to use it like they used PPC on Google in the past and that fails.

20. You have to first immerse yourself and learn the nuances of the platform itself. Each one is different. You can’t just go spam on them or use them like you used any other one.

21. What is happening right in front of our eyes, is that we are living through the single biggest culture shift of our time.

22. This “Internet thing” is grossly undervalued and underrated by pretty much EVERYONE in the space right now.

23. If you’re not focused on and thinking about LIFETIME VALUE, your play will only last so long. The future will belong to those entrepreneurs that embrace and focus on LIFETIME CUSTOMER VALUE. Embed any and every platform that’s “hot” around a foundation focused on cultivating the LIFETIME VALUE of your audience. Earn that and you win… long term.
