Values Matter :: The Path That Takes You There

The foundation of knowing who you are
is being aware of your values, your “hat.”

What hat do you where in life?

What ONE hat do you where?

What is really important to you?

Knowing your own values and being
in an environment that allows you
to be true to them every day are key
to more than just “job satisfactions;”

They are also the key to a happy life.

We all have to make sure we’re pursuing
what is most important…

Don’t compromise…

Don’t be less than your true self.

None of the principles of personal leadership
will hold water if they aren’t built on a solid foundation.

Caring, independent thinking, listening,
and truth telling will not support you and
your organization if they are not true to
WHO YOU ARE and aligned with the goals
of your Master-Mind or organization.

Sometimes you will have to make hard
decisions in order to keep your values
intact, but make them…

The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Ask yourself questions and test your answers…

For example:

1. What gets you up and excited to the point
of anxiety to do the work?

2. What are you willing to sacrifice for this
work, this role, this dream?

3. How competitive are you?
How do you treat people?
Do you value and practice honesty?

4. What rewards satisfy you?

5. How important is it that you live near
where you grew up? How willing are you
to travel?

6. How important is independence to you?

7. What is your threshold for stress?
What brings you into a “flow” state of
intense time-stopping engagement?

8. Are you most comfortable and excited to
work in entrepreneurial and start-up settings
or in established “knowable” environments
with more secure resources and capital?

9. What will you regret not doing or not trying?

10. What is the one thing that makes you
comfortable being who you are?

Think about where you are on a scale of 1 to 10
for the following traits (1 being lowest, 10 highest):

1. Risk orientation.

2. Working as part of a team.

3. Independence.

4. Being in charge, being autonomous.

5. People-driven (as opposed to project-driven).

Important concepts to think about.

There’s another topic that is much discussed in
the context of values, and that is the notion of “balance.”

In my mind, balance isn’t a value.

When you wear one hat and live and act based on
your values, balance isn’t the issue.

Yes, you may go through a time with too much
work and too much stress…

You will surely go through times of crisis
and conflict both internal and external…

But when you wear one hat, your life has
meaning and passion.

Your whole life is engaged in the choices,
struggles, and joys you experience.

You’re not trying to “balance” your life,
you’re living it.

When you know yourself, when you wear one hat,
when you “walk your talk,” whether it’s at work or
at home, you will see yourself learning, growing,
and changing.

Those are values that you can use to guide
your life and lead others.
