Misunderstood – Apple Holiday Ad Applies to Online Business Entrepreneurs

Like Apple’s “Misunderstood” Ad, Home Business Owners Are Often Misunderstood

Usually, as a home based entrepreneur you’ll be misunderstood…

People will assume you’re money hungry and just greedy…

They’ll say you care more about your dumb “internet thing” than your family…

Even people in the same arena promoting different things will use you or your program/company as the “villain” and libel and slander you to promote their own.

People will act insecure and walk around with an assumption that “the grass is greener” everywhere else all the time…

People will blame their lack of results on the program, or the leadership (any program and any leadership) and it will be much easier to bail out and join the other deal across the street and market INTO their last program to pull people out and misdirect them…

And it’ll work for a little while…

That always works for a little while, because it cuts to the core of people’s insecurities, like this:

“Hey, how’s Program A going for you?”

“Oh, really? You haven’t made money in 6 months?”

“Well, it’s not working for you, you should see this one and get in first, it’s working great!”

“All their leaders will be getting in here soon, you might as well be the first this time…”

“Oh it’s saturated… you should jump in this one…”

“You should have multiple streams anyway…”

“Why don’t you make your own product?”

“You should create your own coaching program.”

And in all that, they never fix the issue at the core of their problems all the time.

They do not gain more competence in their own marketing and selling skills.

So all those little bandaids will work, for a little while…

But eventually, they dry up the cross recruiting well and the same people in the new program start to have problems getting results (because it’s the same people, in the same mindsets, with the same lack of skills and practice) so eventually they can’t just keep poaching in other programs and the people who fail to learn to market and sell start to complain about the new program too.

It’s a vicious cycle I’ve seen playout for over 13 years online.

The very same people who claim to need all the help are the same people who always start to destroy teams, slow momentum, quit and program-hop all over the place, instead of working on their confidence, committing to themselves, their customers and their teammates and elevating their marketing skills by coming out of their shells and stepping into a more confident personality.

And all the while, the stable, competent, professional, long term marketers with skill, keep generating consistent results and get misunderstood.

They now get labeled as the “mean” big money earners who don’t care about the little people. And the companies get labeled as cold and stupid and only looking after the top producers… and it goes on…

The vicious cycle of self-centered incompetence and desperation.

Many don’t know it’s happening but it still is…

And the cure to all this is so simple.

It’s not complicated to generate consistent results in this business.

You don’t need 27 programs and you don’t need guarantees and a $2 price point to sell it.

What people in this situation need is to stop being so self-centered & selfish.

Here’s what I mean…

If you truly look into the actions of most “struggling” marketers that bounce from program to program or join a program and almost immediately begin to complain about it or its leaders and owners etc, you’ll find a person who is always just focused on “me, me, me” and they’re always focused on what “it” does for them. Not all, but most, I’m just being honest and if this aggravates some, then maybe they’re relating with this and if the shoe fits…

They don’t focus on how they could serve their market.
They’re not focused on how they could serve their team.
They’re not focused on how they could serve the brand and message of their program.
They’re not focused on how they could champion their own customers and affiliates.

They only seem focused on complaining about any little thing they don’t like about the program or its leaders etc.

They’re only focused on themselves.

They’re too focused on making sure they stay “above” everything and everyone else and they “know it all” already so don’t need all that “mumbo-jumbo” stuff. And it’s funny how they hurt themselves because of that attitude.

The cure:

Focus on others.

Focus on serving people in your market.

Focus on creating content (little bits and pieces) that serves your market.

Focus on keeping the message in line with the overall big picture message coming from your brand or program.

Lose yourself and your needs in the service of other people like you and you will see more and more people actually attracted to your content. You’ll see more and more people actually interested in what you have to say. They should instead, get down in the trenches with them and stop thinking they’re so high and mighty and above it all…


Share your story.

Share your vision.

And let people know that no matter what and whatever they end up deciding to do, you will be here for them.

Be the rock.

Be firm.

When people see you’re THAT leader, they will flock to you.

Then you simply let them know, what you have is a simple way to change and improve their life and they need to share it with other people in the way you’re sharing it with them.

This has NEVER been a complicated business.

It’s simple.

It gets diluted and complicated by people who bring their own complications into it.

Keep it simple.

Don’t worry about others that misunderstand you or your intentions.

Get fired up and go serve people.

Invite them to step into a better future…

…a future they can begin to build themselves, day by day.

People follow vision.
People love stories.
People love to see themselves in your mission.

Share that with them and keep building.

Why are you building a home business?
What’s the point?
What are you building?
What’s the vision?
Where have you come from on the journey?
Why did you choose to build it?
What were you frustrated by?
What is it that you’re trying to create long term?
And why?

Share that in your content and share it wide…

Apple, in their “Misunderstood” commercial tells you exactly what they’re building and they share with you exactly why they’re building it even though they know they are often misunderstood. Watch the video again.

It’s the same thing they face.

And they communicate not with a mile long list of the features of their product, but rather with an engaging story of a teenager who was misunderstood because they saw an aloof kid with his head stuck down on his phone the whole time…

A kid disconnected from the family and what was really going on during their holiday celebration, but who in the end actually produced the most intimate and strong emotions for their whole family. He caught the whole spirit of the occasion and documented it for them.

He showed them what he saw in his mind way before they saw it.

He focused and kept building…

He didn’t have to stop everything he was doing to explain the reasons behind every little action. He just kept building it without a concern for their assumptions.

And in the end they saw his true intention.

Do that.

It’s the same anywhere.

People are so confused and disoriented and overwhelmed with life that they themselves have no clue where they’re going.

See it first and show them.

It’s ok to be misunderstood.

Keep serving people.
