Educate or Stagnate

It’s plain that keeping up with new online marketing trends and techniques requires education. Not the formal business school MBA type- that’s too slow. What is required is an enthusiastic group of like-minded people who share ideas and tips. Are you educating yourself to find and exploit new territory, expand existing business, and keep the ideas flowing? The first person who sold beanie babies on eBay made money. So did the next ten. But the next thousand probably didn’t.

Knowledge is Power

Keeping track of trends and new methods isn’t just a hobby, it’s a real source of income. There are two reasons for this. The first few out of the gate have an advantage in time. They lead the race by definition. But also, they are the ones that late arrivers have to come to for schooling. There is a value in simply knowing more than the next guy.

But it isn’t essential to know it all yourself if you are enrolled in a team. By having many minds all interested and all involved, you participate in a group effort that multiplies the available knowledge. No one person can keep up with all areas of online marketing: co-branding, affiliate marketing, ezine and forum marketing, social networking, and many others yet to be invented.

Keeping it fresh

What are your goals for the next week, month, and fiscal year? Do they include buying and reading books in your area of interest? They should. Every time you read a good marketing book, you lift yourself up on the education ladder and have more skills you can apply and more knowledge you can share.

Do you mentor? You should. By helping another online entrepreneur, you make a strong connection with another businessperson and lock-in the information you thought you knew. There is nothing like teaching someone else to find out how well you know something.

Do you work to establish and maintain relationships with other business owners you meet? You should. Too often we let our instinct for competition overcome our better instinct for networking and relationship building. Find out who your competition is, not with the idea of overwhelming them, but with the idea of working together to share a larger pie- the Internet is a pie that is hundreds of millions strong.
